Learn about KILT

Treasury

The KILT Treasury is a store of on-chain funds that are available for creating innovative solutions that benefit the network, contributing to its long-term sustainability.

Any KILT Coin holder can create a proposal and request funds from the Treasury.

Supporting the KILT network

Anyone can create a proposal and request Treasury funds for initiatives that benefit the network, from software or infrastructure development, to outreach and hackathons, or educational content such as videos, blogs and translations.

The Treasury started with around 500,000 KILT in November 2020 when KILT launched as a decentralized network. Around two million newly-minted KILT Coins are added per year for the first five years, as outlined in the KILT Coin Metrics document
nt.Additionally, half of the transaction fees on the KILT network go to the Treasury. This provides enough funding for the chain to be self-sustainable in the long term, including self-funding its parachain slot on Polkadot.

Constitution

The Constitution of KILT Protocol was proposed and approved by the KILT community and enacted in January 2023.

It represents the final step to achieve decentralized governance of KILT Protocol.

In December 2022, the Constitution of KILT Protocol was proposed and approved by the KILT community, and enacted in January 2023.

In December 2022, the Constitution of KILT Protocol was proposed and approved by the KILT community, and enacted in January 2023.
This Constitution is a key step to decentralization of the protocol and states in part that:

01

We, the KILT community, uphold the values of transparency, privacy, collaboration and fairness.

02

The composition of the KILT bodies should be diverse and represent as many interest groups in the ecosystem as possible.

03

We believe that the KILT software should be open source and be used in the spirit of the concepts and principles of human rights.

04

This Constitution shall be in force for any kind of participation in KILT Protocol, and all members of its bodies, holders of KILT Coins, and other participants of the ecosystem shall be bound to it and its goals and values.

Governance

KILT is a decentralized identity blockchain network.

Every KILT Coin holder has a say in how the network is run, with decisions made by the community using a transparent system of on-chain governance.

Decentralization through community governance

A sophisticated system of governance allows KILT to run as a decentralized identity blockchain that can evolve and be self-sustainable, enhancing privacy on the internet for decades to come.

Any KILT Coin holder can submit a proposal, which then goes through a formal, transparent on-chain procedure. A proposal usually ends in a referendum that goes to community vote. KILT Coin holders can also vote on existing proposals and referenda.

Coins that are locked for staking can also be used to vote.

When a referendum on KILT is successful, the upgrade will be enacted by the blockchain after KILT’s enactment period of one day. Upgrades do not require a “fork” in the blockchain, as often found in older blockchain networks like Bitcoin. KILT upgrades can simply be carried out by changing the code on-chain, also known as a runtime upgrade.

KILT

Coin Utility

KILT is a decentralized identity blockchain network.

Every KILT Coin holder has a say in how the network is run, with decisions made by the community using a transparent system of on-chain governance.

KILT launched in September 2021 with three main uses for the KILT Coin – on-chain functions, payment, and staking. Further utilities will be added as the network matures. A summary is given below; for more details see the Token Economy paper here.
‍On-chain utility
01

KILT Coins can be locked for voting in on-chain governance. Locking KILT for longer periods enables conviction voting and increases voting power

02

Deposits encourage users to delete DIDs they no longer need, removing unnecessary data and defending against spamming

03

Transaction fees are needed for anchoring credentials, DIDs, CTypes, and trust hierarchies on the KILT blockchain

Payment
01

Claimers can pay Attesters for digital revocable credentials

02

Attesters pay transaction fees to anchor credentials on the KILT blockchain

Staking
01

Rewards facilitate chain maintenance by incentivizing collators, who hold the data of the KILT blockchain, collect transactions and build blocks

02

Rewards incentivize delegators to back reliable collators with their stake, increasing trust in the system

In the fourth year of the network (measured in block time), it is anticipated that other KILT functions will be in place that will provide new utilities for KILT Coins.

White Paper

and Token
Economy

The KILT Coin is currently used in three ways: as payment for DIDs and attestation services, for on-chain functions including governance, and for staking.

KILT's original White Paper from May 2019 details the concept and technical implementation of KILT Protocol. In January 2020 the White Paper was updated with new text addressing areas such as the token economy, system architecture and nested claim types (CTypes).

Read White Paper

The KILT Coin Metrics paper, published in August 2021, focuses specifically on the token economy, covering areas such as distribution and KILT Coin utility. KILT tokenomics were intentionally designed with low inflation in order to be sustainable in the long term.
